Spyfall is an exciting social deduction game where players become FBI detectives trying to catch an enemy spy hiding in their ranks. Most players know the secret location they are investigating together, but one player is the Spy who has no clue about the place. The game is all about asking smart questions, giving careful answers, and using observation to expose the imposter or cleverly blending in if you are the Spy.
Player Count Spyfall is designed for 4 to 12 players. It shines with more participants, creating more opportunities for suspicion and fun. The game can be played in the same room or online during a video call like Zoom.
What You Need Each player simply needs their own smartphone, tablet, or computer with the Spyfall app installed. The app takes care of everything else no cards or extra materials are required.
Setting Up a Round One player acts as the leader and starts the round in the app. Everyone receives a secret role:
- All non-Spy players get the same location (for example, the bank, a submarine, or a space station).
- One player is randomly chosen as the Spy and only sees the word Spy. The round has a time limit, typically 6 to 10 minutes depending on the group size.
How Gameplay Works The leader begins by asking a question about the location to another player. The questioned player gives a direct answer (usually yes or no, or a short response) without any extra explanations. After answering, that player then asks a question to someone else. The questioning continues around the group in this chain.
Important rule: You cannot ask a question back to the person who just questioned you (no retaliation). Questions should be indirect and strategic, while answers must be natural and not too revealing.
Accusing the Spy At any point during the round, a player can say they want to put someone up for indictment. Voting then happens clockwise, and every player must vote. The indictment only succeeds if the vote is completely unanimous. Each player can only initiate one indictment per round. If the vote passes, the accused player reveals their role and the round ends.
Winning the Round
- Non-Spy players win if they successfully indict the real Spy.
- The Spy wins if no one is indicted, if a non-Spy player is wrongly indicted, or if the Spy correctly guesses the secret location at any time (even by stopping the game to make the guess). If the timer runs out without a successful indictment or correct guess, the Spy usually wins the round.
Scoring Across Multiple Rounds Points are awarded after each round:
- When the Spy is caught: Each non-Spy player gets 1 point, and the player who started the successful indictment gets 2 points.
- When the Spy wins: The Spy gets 2 points for surviving undetected, or 4 points for getting a non-Spy indicted or for correctly guessing the location.
Points accumulate over several rounds. At the end of the session, the player with the highest total score is the overall winner.
Helpful Strategies Non-Spy players should craft questions that help reveal inconsistencies without giving away the location. The Spy needs to listen carefully, ask broad questions that could fit many places, and answer in a way that sounds believable. Using indictments wisely is key, since each player gets only one attempt per round and unanimity is required.
